James Reece (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers), personal aide to the U.S. Ambassador to France, is secretly moonlighting as a low-level CIA operative. Looking for more action, Reece accepts a job that teams him with wise-cracking special agent Charlie Wax (John Travolta), a trigger-happy loose cannon sent to Paris on a mission of international importance. Now, Reece finds himself on the wildest ride of his life as the new partners pull out all the stops to annihilate the enemy in this explosive, white-knuckle, non-stop thriller. An uncomplicated, moderately entertaining action film, From Paris With Love offers an enthusiastic performance by John Travolta as a just-this-side-of-crazy agent and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors) as the low-level operative newly partnered wit! h him. Outwardly an aide to the U.S. Ambassador in France, James Reese (Rhys Meyers) is also a low-level CIA operative, tasked with generally mundane duties. Then his inside contact offers him a high-level assignment that could lead to a promotion to full agent. All Reese has to do is drive CIA agent Charlie Wax (Travolta) around Paris on an undisclosed mission. But Wax is a shoot first, don't bother with questions kinda guy, and the straitlaced Reese quickly finds himself riding shotgun to a killing-spree through Paris' underground drug sub-culture. The drugs lead the obviously opposite duo to a hidden terrorist cell, and they race to stop the suicide bombers' plot. Wax's wise-cracking, one-on-many fight scenes are adequately entertaining--especially when he flings bad guys down a curving staircase, as Reese tries to avoid getting hit by the bodies--but the action generally leaves you wanting more. An undesirable characteristic in an action movie. Based on a story by Luc B! esson, (The Fifth Element and The Transporter! movies), one can't help wonder if the complexity of the story and characters could have been improved if he'd written the screenplay himself. However, the simplistic story offers a few surprises and laugh-worthy one-liners. The climactic final chase scene--Agent Wax hanging out the window of a speeding Audi, armed with heavy artillery and a driver with nerves of steel, as he attempts to stop one phase of the planned attack--is as impossible as one could hope for in this kind of movie. And hearing Travolta call his burger a “royale with cheese” is almost worth the rest of the movie. --Jill Corddry

Bright Young Things
may take place during the Jazz Age, but author Anna Godberson shows us that the tunes she prefers range from Cat Power to Prince. Check out what she loves and why. (Click on the song name to listen to a sample)

"River Deep â€" Mountain High" by Ike & Tina Turner

I spend a lot of time in a chair in front of my computer obsessively reworking sentences. This song is ecstatic and full of life and whenever I hear it I want to get up and move! .

"Lived in Bars" ! by Cat Power
This song sounds to me like the wise, sad, tired, wired, voice of experience, the kind of beauty that you can only see after you’ve been worn down. That’s what Bright Young Things is all about.

"You Said Something" by PJ Harvey
This one is like an exquisite New Yorker story, perfect in its simplicity and specificity but universal in what it expresses.

"California" by Joni Mitchell
That’s where I’m from, and this is the soundtrack of my homesickness. Plus, the lyrics are literary and whip-smart and impossible for a California girl to forget.

"Go West" by Liz Phair
People like to make fun of Liz Phair these days, but her voice was the voice of my young womanhood, and “Go West” was the anthem of all to-! hell-with-men, bridge-burning episodes.

"Love Me Like A Man" by Bonnie Raitt
The title says it all, and it just gets better from there.

"Tell It Like It Is" by Etta James
Awesome plea for romantic decency, but in that raw, lusty, commanding voice. After at least four thousand listens, I still nod along like the first time.

"You Only Live Once" by The Strokes
Not to date myself, but around the time I graduated from college, this was the coolest band to mock. Who cares? In my opinion, this is the ultimate jogging song.

"I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" by Prince
This is also an instant dance party number for meâ€"is anyone as weird and cool as Prince?

"God" by John Lennon
To me! , this i s the ultimate expression of an artist’s belief in self. There is something bleak, but also really clear-eyed and uplifting about. Plus, it’s gorgeous.

"Bring It On Home to Me" by Sam Cooke
If I could curl up in Sam Cooke’s voice and sleep forever, I’d do it. This one is just so desperate and romantic and it sounds just like what it means.

"Like A Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan
My parents were hippies, and I grew up in the Church Of Dylan. For a guaranteed good time, get on the freeway, roll the window down, step on the gas, and turn the volume up on this number. Please be prepared to sing along.

"Some time in the past when things were much as they are now, only more so..." A satirical comedy as well as a love story, Bright Youngs Things marks the the directoral debut of actor Stephen Fry. "Bright Young Things," says Fry, "is a period film! shot with modern pace and cinematography. It deals with fame,! sexual scandal, greed, night-clubbing, and the frantic glamour of youth."

While the central plot of Bright Young Things is a romance, it is also a highly topical social comedy that shows a conservative older generation failing to understand the club culture, music, dance, and frenetic pace of its children, modern society at its most decadent and most colorful is fully on display as is the popular media fueled by gossip columnists and paparazzi who dominate a tabloid press propelled by rumor and scandal.

Comedy superstar Rob Schneider is back once more as Deuce Bigalow, the big-hearted male gigolo with the least down below. Fleeing to Europe following a near run-in with the Malibu PD, Deuce finds himself thrust back into the pleasure-for-pay profession when his former pimp (Eddie Griffin) is wrongly accused of murdering Europe's highest-priced man-whores. Working under-the-covers, Deuce seduces a bevy of super-freaky female clients (as well as Dutch supermodel Hanna Verboom) to learn the identity of the real killer ! in this outrageous laugh-orgy that will have you screaming with delight from start to finish! If the repeated use of the phrase "man-whore" is your recipe for hilarity, Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo is your movie. Rob Schneider (The Hot Chick, The Animal) returns as the hapless male prostitute, in this case lured back into the man-whore lifestyle in order to investigate the killings of European man-whores. His former pimp T.J. (Eddie Griffin, Undercover Brother) has set up shop in Amsterdam, where he finds himself accused of both the man-whore murders and of being a homosexual. From this slender, ridiculous premise springs dozens of gags about flatulence, breasts, and male sexual organs--in fact, the number of phallus stand-ins (noses, swords, man-whore of the year awards) would seem excessive to Aristophanes. And yet, despite all things crass and tawdry, Schneider remains bizarrely innocent, and this movie, like the first one, feels inexplicably! sweet. The fundamental ethos of Deuce Bigalow is that everyon! e, no ma tter how they look, deserves to be loved. A wild and raunchy comedy t! hat always aims to please -- you won't be able to resist this sidesplitting laugh riot!Saturday Night Live alum and Adam Sandler sidekick Rob Schneider plays the title character of Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, a miserable fish-tank cleaner who stumbles onto a new and different lifestyle when he looks after the fish of a high-priced male prostitute (Oded Fehr from The Mummy). Deuce teams up with a man-pimp (Eddie Griffin), gets harassed by a crazed cop (William Forsythe), and of course falls in love with a cute client (Arija Bareikis). The nonsensical plot is festooned with gags about wet T-shirts, foul-mouthed senior citizens, flatulence, Tourette's syndrome, narcolepsy, and just about everything else you might imagine. More surprising is that, by and large, the movie works. It's a combination of bad taste and goodheartedness, similar to There's Something About Mary, which Deuce Bigalow is clearly emulating. It's not the pat "people should! learn to accept themselves for who they are" theme or the for! mulaic h appy ending; it's that the movie understands that sex is not the same thing as happiness or contentment. For all its crassness, Deuce Bigalow actually treats its characters as people, and the result is silly, obnoxious, and enjoyable. --Bret FetzerIf the repeated use of the phrase "man-whore" is your recipe for hilarity, "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo" is your movie. He loves cricket, pomegranates, the night sky, his clever, vibrant artistic mother and his etymologically obsessed lawyer father, and he adores his next-door neighbour Zehra. One early summer morning, while lazing happily on the roof, Hasan watches a young boy flying a yellow kite fall to his death. Soon after, Hasan's idyllic, sheltered family life is shattered when his beloved uncle Salman, a dissenting politician,! is arrested and charged with treason. Set in a land ruled by ! an oppre sive military regime, this eloquent, charming and quietly political novel vividly recreates the confusing world of a young boy on the edge of adulthood, and beautifully illustrates the transformative power of the imagination. It's said that the sins of the father are visited upon the son, a theme that permeates this based-on-a-true-story cop film with a generational twist. Given the film's troubling emotional core and urban landscape, composer John Murphy scores it with remarkably eclectic panache. Starting with a somber, string-driven theme that subtly evokes the story's undercurrents of Greek tragedy, Murphy quickly draws upon everything from ska rhythms, Chopin piano pieces, house music, and even East Asian flourishes to bring its various emotional and cultural conflicts into focus. It's a score whose range and dynamic sense alone are impressive, but also one that never forgets where its heart lies. Murphy occasionally lapses into predictable action cues, but it's his evoc! ative side excursions into the pop vernacular that balance the autumnal orchestral themes and impart the entire score with compelling new dimensions. It's a great example of how music can be more than merely the sum of its parts. --Jerry McCulley Drama. Three standard jewel cases housed in a slip-box. 2002.Self-absorbed New Age composer Lucien (Andrew Borba) feels overshadowed by the talent and fame of his "improv" violinist wife Gypsy (Annunziata Gianzero), so she abandons her music to placate him, and together they retreat to their beach front home. Gypsy just "needs to fly again, needs to dream," like she did when her grandfather played for her as a little girl. Meanwhile Lucien's serial killer brother Jimmy (Thomas Jay Ryan) comes to visit after a long absence. The three walk on the beach, drink, and talk about their pasts. Gypsy listens to wind chimes and confides in a mysterious beachcomber; Lucien grows frustrated composing his next album, and Jimmy drowns the local women. Meanwhile a retired Boston detective is on Jimmy's trail, and eventually explosive confrontations erupt on both artistic and psychological levels. DISCHORD i! s a unique, low-budget indie from writer-producer-director-edi! tor Mark Wilkinson. It seems to take place in an alternative New Age universe where even cops and Cape Cod fisherman talk about appeasing the spirits and New Age music is more popular than rock and rap combined. Naturally there's an intriguing score, and Hal Hartley fans will relish seeing HENRY FOOL star Ryan in another meaty role.
