Elephant, the elegant and unsettling movie from Gus Van Sant (My Own Private Idaho, Good Will Hunting), depicts students at a high school before and during a harrowing, Columbine-style shooting. A more relaxing approach, however, is to be bored and vaguely annoyed by them, or, better still, not to notice them in the first place. This is the premise of Edgar Wright's British comedy, which may be responsible for kicking off a new and specialized genre of slacker horror. Shaun (Simon Pegg) lives a supremely uneventful life, which revolves around his girlfriend (Kate Ashfield), his mother (Penelope Wilton), and, above all, his local pub. This gentle routine is threatened when the dead return to life and make strenuous attempts to snack on ordinary Londoners. The finale, in which the pub turns into an Alamo, is the bloodiest, mos! t orthodox, and least witty part of the movie; far sharper are! the ear ly scenes in which Shaun wanders happily to the local store along a battered, zombie-dotted street and pulps his attackers with a cricket bat. After Wedding Crashers, Definitely, Maybe, and the underrated Lookout, doll-faced Australian transplant Isla Fisher was well positioned to graduate to leading lady. Unfortunately, fellow Aussie P.J. Hogan’s version of Sophie Kinsella’s British book series isn't the best showcase for her talents as the movie is even more shallow and predictable than it sounds (Hogan got his start with Muriel’s Wedding). Fisher plays Rebecca Bloomwood, a writer with more enthusiasm for accessories than articles. When her employer, a gardening magazine, goes out of business, she tries her luck at fashion bible Alette, but winds up at a dull financial rag instead (Kristin Scott Thomas has glamorous fun playing Alette). Fortunately, her understanding ne! w editor (Hugh Dancy, Ella Enchanted) encourages Becky ! to devel op her own breezy style. Soon, the Girl in the Green Scarf, her columnist alter-ego, is the toast of Manhattan, but the Girl fails to take the same sensible spending advice she dishes out. As her career progresses, her credit card debt increases until a rival (Leslie Bibb) helps to expose her on national television. Everyone abandons Becky, except for her frugal parents (Joan Cusack and John Goodman), until she finds a way to redeem herself. It's hard to argue with the film's message, but Confessions wants to have it both ways: to encourage women to shop until they drop while making them feel lousy about it. As with Sex and the City and The Devil Wears Prada, costume designer Patricia Field assembles an endless parade of eye-popping outfits --Kathleen C. Fennessy

In his first starring role, Samberg is amateur stuntman Rod Kimble. To raise money for his ailing stepfather, Frank (played with devilish glee by Deadwood's Ian McShane), Rod plans to jump 15 school buses on a moped. With support from his crew, which includes SNL's Bill Hader and Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers), Rod trains for the big event. All the while, Denise (Fisher) is seeing obnoxious attorney Jonathan (Will Arnett, Arrested Development). Lack of physical dexterity aside, Rod prevails through pure dogged determination. You've seen it before, and if you can't get enough of this sort of thing, you'll see it again. Hot Rod i! s the kind of slapdash comedy that neglects to provide its her! o with a n age, a job, or even a hometown. But don't count Samberg out. Given time, he may yet craft a persona that doesn't borrow so heavily from the man-boy antics associated with Ferrell and Adam Sandler. Still, Hot Rod would've worked better with the funnier, more sympathetic Jorma Taccone, who plays Rod's half-brother, in the lead--on the other hand, that's the same formula that made Napoleon Dynamite a hit. --Kathleen C. After making a name for himself on SNL through a series of shorts, particularly viral video favorite "Lazy Sunday," the way ! was clear for Andy Samberg to segue to the big screen. Directed by SNL scribe Akiva Schaffer, Hot Rod proves his humor works best in small doses. Then again, producer Will Ferrell got his start in A Night at the Roxbury. In his first starring role, Samberg is amateur stuntman Rod Kimble. To raise money for his ailing stepfather, Frank (played with devilish glee by Deadwood's Ian McShane), Rod plans to jump 15 school buses on a moped. With support from his crew, which includes SNL's Bill Hader and Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers), Rod trains for the big event. All the while, Denise (Fisher) is seeing obnoxious attorney Jonathan (Will Arnett, Arrested Development). Lack of physical dexterity aside, Rod prevails through pure dogged determination. You've seen it before, and if you can't get enough of this sort of thing, you'll see it again.
