While driving down a country road, Carrie Mitchell (Daryl Hannah) is en route to her new life in Salem, Maine. Suddenly, from out of the woods staggers Amy Singer, injured and scared! Carrie pulls over to help, and her young passenger begins to tell Carrie a horrifying story of what happened to her and her friends in the woods. Through a series of flashbacks we witness the horrific events of Amy and her colleagues, who days earlier were out on an environmental studies trip for college. Camped in the forest excavating what they believed was an ancient Indian burial site, they come across an arm bone, with a Rolex watch still attached around the wrist. It dawns on the group that they have discovered a burial ground, but not the type they were seeking! Carrie soon discovers that Amy carries a deadly secret, and the unspeakable horror that happened ! in the woods is far from over.Teenager Johnny Rourke (Aidan Quinn) is reckless. Born on the wrong side of the tracks, he breaks the law and girls' hearts with equal cool. Cheerleader Tracey Prescott (Daryl Hannah) is reckless too. She dumps her conventional life and boring boyfriend to follow Johnny wherever his dangerous path leads.

Set to a driving rock score, Reckless captures three talents at the start of their careers. The film marks Quinn's (Legends of the Fall) film debut, showcases Hannah one month before she made a Splash with Tom Hanks and features a screenplay by Chris Columbus, whose Gremlins and The Goonies soon stormed the box office.

One of a series of "angry teen" moves in the '80s, Reckless (1984) stars Aidan Quinn as rebellious youth Johnny Rourke and Daryl Hannah as Tracey Prescott, an upper-class good girl who! falls in love with bad boy Johnny in a Rust Belt town. While! the fil m is well known for launching the careers of its young stars (Jennifer Grey and Adam Baldwin also appear in small roles, and Chris Columbus wrote the screenplay), it also distinguishes itself by the driving rock soundtrack. Romeo Void's "Never Say Never," Bob Seger's "Roll Me Away," Kim Wilde's "Kids in America," and three songs ("The One Thing," "Soul Mistake," and "To Look at You") from Shabooh Shoobah, an album from a then-unknown Australian band called INXS, punctuate the sizzling chemistry between Quinn and Hannah, especially in scenes on the dance floor and late at night at the high school. --David Horiuchi

RAMBLING ROSE - DVD MovieThis overrated period comic-drama, set in Georgia in the 1930s, featured the first mother-daughter team to be nominated for acting Oscars in the same year. Laura Dern plays a free-wheeling young woman who is taken in as a domestic by an upper-class family, headed by Robert Duvall and Diane Ladd (Dern's real-life mother). Rose, who tends to let her sexual urges get the best of her, scandalizes everyone in three counties (including Duvall and Lukas Haas, who plays his son) wit! h her willing spirit. Do those kind of loose morals warrant court-ordered sterilization? Or does this young woman just need a guiding hand? While many fell for this cornpone shtick, directed by Martha Coolidge, it's a hard movie to cozy up to because Rose is such a caricature and the rest of the characters (with the exception of the always exceptional Duvall) are such sticks. --Marshall Fine Fifteen-year-old Connie Wyatt (Laura Dern) may be too young to drive, but she's already driving the boys crazy. Based on a Barry Gifford novel, the film stars Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern as lovers on! the lam whose relationship is tested and who meet some truly dangerous wackos (including an almost-simian Willem Dafoe). Lynch's thoughts seem to be everywhere, and he expects the audience to keep up with a story that seems more a collection of avant-garde whims than a coherent vision with the intuitive brilliance of his Blue Velvet. Something's Gotta Give

Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson) is a perennial playboy with a libido much younger than his years. During what was to have been a romantic weekend with his latest infatuation, Marin (Amanda Peet), at her mother's Hamptons beach house, Harry develops chest pains. He winds up being nursed by Marin's reluctant mother Erica Barry (Diane Keaton), a successful, divorced New York playwright. In the process, Harry develops more heart pangs -- the romantic kind -- for Erica, an age-appropriate woman whom he finds beguiling. However, some habits die hard. When Harry hesitates, his charming thirty something doctor (Keanu Reeves) steps in and starts to pursue Erica. And Harry, who has always had the world on a string, finds his life unraveling.As upscale sitcoms go, Something's Gotta Give has more to offer than most romantic com! edies. Obviously working through some semi-autobiographical issues regarding "women of a certain age," writer-director Nancy Meyers brings adequate credibility and above-average intelligence to what is essentially (but not exclusively) a fantasy premise, in which an aging lothario who's always dated younger women (Jack Nicholson, more or less playing himself) falls for a successful middle-aged playwright (Diane Keaton) who's convinced she's past the age of romance, much less sexual re-awakening. As long as old pals Nicholson and Keaton are on screen discussing their dilemma or discovering their mutual desire, Something's Gotta Give is terrific, proving (in case anyone had forgotten) that Hollywood can and should aim for an older demographic. Myers falls short with the sitcom device of a younger lover (Keanu Reeves) who wants Keaton as much as Nicholson does; it's believable but shallow and too easily dismissed. Myers also skimps on supporting roles for Frances McDorm! and, Amanda Peet, and Jon Favreau, but thankfully this is one ! romantic comedy that doesn't pander to youth. Mature viewers, rejoice! --Jeff Shannon

Loaded with ferocious fights and high-octane chases, Doomsday grabs you right from the start, and doesn't let go till its explosive end!Loud, violent, and proudly derivative, the post-apocalyptic action-thriller Doomsday is the latest from UK cult director Neil Marshall, who impressed horror fans with his previous efforts, Dog Soldiers and The Descent. Both pictures established Marshall as a director with a knack for reinventing well-worn genre pictures, but here, he seems more interested in stitching togethe! r favorite scenes and elements from established horror and science-fiction films. Escape from New York is the main source for Doomsday, though there are plenty of nods to The Road Warrior and its multitude of Italian-made carbon copies, as well as the zombie/plague subgenre; the lovely but impassive Rhona Mitra is the Snake Plissken-esque loner sent by police (represented by Bob Hoskins) to infiltrate Scotland, which has descended into anarchy following a viral outbreak. The disease has surfaced in London (now a walled city), and Mitra is dispatched to find a scientist who may possess a cure. Marshall's vision of Scotland in ruins brings together the punk/modern primitive costume design of George Miller's Mad Max trilogy with some eclectic homegrown elements (knights on horseback defending a gang leader's castle), and while these touches are novel, the picture as a whole should ring overly familiar to any viewer who's spent time in the exploitati! on trenches during the past 25 years. Younger and less discern! ing audi ence members will undoubtedly enjoy the plentiful violence and gore, as well as the unbridled performances of the supporting cast, especially stuntwoman/actress Lee-Ann Liebenberg as the heavily tattooed Viper. --Paul Gaita
